I start with a line or shape that feels good and start building on that until a picture begins to emerge. I’ve developed a set of rules for myself over the years to keep from going off the rails (which still happens sometimes). My main rule is that there are no mistakes, just opportunities to take the drawing in a new direction.

I was one of those kids that found what I loved and KNEW. I never stopped wanting to be an artist. I walked away from the corporate world when I graduated college and never looked back. I’ve been self-employed by my art since.
Elise Jokell’s background is in drawing and sculpture, and she brings her influences into her photography not with a flourish, but with storytelling. She studied art in Charlotte, Boston, and Florence, Italy, and then graduated from the New York Institute of Photography.
“I am always learning, and open and ready to explore new ways to express the individual nature of my subjects. My goal is to capture the truth in my images, with an artistic eye, whatever form they may take.”
